Tour # 142
WALKING ECO TOUR OF NAVAL LIVE OAKS AREA
After a trolley pickup at your hotel, you depart for the Naval Live Oaks area of the Gulf
Island National Seashore.
There you can enjoy walking the many trails in this 1,378 acre park that was established
by John Quincy Adams in 1828 as America's first experimental tree farm.
Once in the park, you can view a slide presentation describing the varieties of birds,
animals, fish and plant life that depend on this resource for their survival.
Learn from your guide about the wildlife, barrier islands, saltmarshes, historic structures
and archeological sites along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
After your Walk, relax and enjoy the view while lunch is prepared.
A leisurely lunch is served al fresco on outdoor picnic tables.
Next, stroll the natural trails to the beach and dip your toes in the waters while enjoying
the southern breezes.
A fitting end to your nature tour is a presentation, "Trees for Defense", that details the
historic use of live oak trees (the heaviest of all oaks) for national defense.
Before boarding the trolley for the return trip to your hotel, you will be able to browse
through the gift shop at the Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center.
